"The “modern” GOP is actually a pre-modern identity-based party. It is fundamentally racist, not as a matter of race theory per se, but simply as a matter of us-vs.-them dynamics. I think this fools a lot of people in that sense. I don’t think the GOP mainstream hates blacks and Hispanics because they are black and Hispanic, but rather because they are the “other.” Same with gays. But look, the point is that GOP is has essentially defined itself as against something, and that “something” is an ever-shifting set of others. What this leads to is a party that is fundamentally negative, united by hatreds rather than policy, and the inevitable result of that orientation is a mean-spirited, conspiracy-minded, and hateful organization."
