Between these facts and xkcd’s Christmas music chart, one could conclude that America and American culture began somewhere between 1948 and 1952. It is not much to ask one to delve into American history enough to see that so many things considered tried-and-true American traditions are recent constructs driven largely by the Baby Boom, the Red Scare, and the explosion of the Vast American Middle Class, which has been steadily imploding since the mid-1970s.
I often wonder when this country will find itself in a post-Baby-Boom era. Quite a lot of Boomers would have to be dead for such an era to begin, and so many of those smug bastards will empty the social safety nets to keep themselves alive well into their 80s (see “Middle Class implosion”, above).
